The Principal Business Intelligence (BI)/Data Warehouse (DW) Analyst requires an excellent communicator that thrives in a collaborative environment. The candidate must be a process-oriented individual, with strong organizational skills, who has the flexibility to succeed in a fast-paced, dynamic atmosphere. The Principal BI/DW Analyst must have a proven track record with Enterprise Data Warehousing concepts, including complex schema designs and self-service analytics & reporting. In addition, multiple discipline business analysis skills are needed for this role. Candidate must also possess experience with design and development in the areas of Business Intelligence and Data Quality. This individual is responsible for planning, designing, and developing BI projects and initiatives, both small and large. This is a hands-on role, responsible for the end-to-end solution design of key BI/DW processes across various corporate functions using enterprise analytic tools. The recommended solution must meet operational requirements, such as scalability, maintainability, security, reliability, extensibility, flexibility, availability, and manageability. The Principal BI/DW Analyst is an individual that can mentor a team of technical resources. The candidate should have a strong customer focus and be able to communicate and navigate many different personalities and opinions. Basic domain knowledge of the retail industry is a must for this role and a familiarity with finance, supply chain, and marketing is a big plus. We are open to remote candidates based in the continental United States for this opportunity.


Reports To: Manager, Solution Delivery & Design


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • BI/DW Analyst (75%)
    • Design, develop and test complex systems and translate user requirements into BI Solutions
    • Analyze the solution impact on the existing systems and processes
    • Provides final review of BI Solutions prior to delivery
    • Build Views, Schema, Metrics, Reports, Dashboards, Dossiers, Documents, Automated Procedures
    • Understand Stored Procedure concepts and other scripts (Python) to assist in the successful load of the data or automation of processes
    • Create, manage, and modify logical and physical data models using a variety of data modeling philosophies and techniques including Inmon, or Kimball
    • Performance tuning of SQL
    • Investigate data quality issues to determine root causes and resolve data issues or recommend process change to prevent reoccurrence
    • Support the adoption of industry best practices for BI Solutions
    • Develop and maintain BI standards, strategies, and best practices, including continuous improvement of data quality applications to ensure detection of data issues.
    • Champion data quality, integrity, and reliability throughout the department by designing and promoting best practices
    • Participate in the on-call support rotation
    • Provide timely updates, status, and issues on items in progress
  • Team Lead / Mentor (25%)
    • Provide support to team members with technical expertise, complex systems understanding or programming knowledge
    • Provide technical training to other DSW associates to foster stronger cross-departmental relations


Required Skills:

  • Proven extensive hands-on experience with at least one of major BI platforms (MicroStrategy) which includes building/maintaining well performing cubes, grids, dashboards, custom SQL reports, and dossiers.
  • Proven extensive hands-on experience creating and integrating MicroStrategy objects (attributes, filters, facts, prompts, consolidations, custom groups, calculated metrics, advanced thresholds, caching, alerts, subscriptions, and report optimizations.
  • Familiarity with Tableau.  Other BI platform experience will be considered (Cognos, OBIEE, SSRS, SSAS).
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills (including formal documentation) as well as strong presentation and collaboration skills. Documentation must resonate with appropriate audience. Solid in the use of the following tools: MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint MS Visio
  • Experienced in Data Warehouse, Data Modeling & Database practices
  • Experience with high-scale or distributed RDBMS (Teradata, Netezza, Greenplum, Aster Data, Vertica) or other databases (Oracle, SQL Server, Hadoop, Cloudera) or Cloud (GCP/BQ)
  • Fluent in relational database concepts
  • Expert knowledge of SQL
  • Expert skills in relational and dimensional modeling (conceptual, logical, and physical data models)
  • Experience with developing capacity plans for new and existing systems
  • Experience in systems design & implementation
  • Demonstrated competency in all phases of project from inception to production deployment.
  • Solid understanding of design, build and test phases of Software Development Lifecycles (SDLC) methodologies i.e., waterfall, agile
  • Maintain partnerships across the organization and influence senior management, peers, and staff through collaboration
  • Lead and mentor junior team members and work effectively as part of a team, remote or onsite.

  • 8+ years of experience delivering (designing, developing, and implementing) business intelligence solutions as a programmer, system analyst, developer, or similar position
  • 8+ years of experience with OLTP and OLAP database models
  • 8+ years of experience with more than 1 Database tools such as Oracle/SQL Server/Teradata/MySQL/DB2/Erwin



  • Dashboard and scorecard design and implementation
  • New technologies, platform and approaches in analytics including Big Data, unstructured data analysis, social network data analytics
  • Data Warehouse, Data Modeling, & Database tools and techniques
  • Data governance, quality, mapping, profiling, cleansing and/or standardization
  • Knowledge of infrastructure and storage design
  • Strong understanding of data management principles
  • Knowledge of data acquisition, cleansing and integrations processes
  • Experience with retail industry, with focus on analytics, architecture and/or BI
  • High level knowledge of supply chain, order management, transactional sources, financial acumen, inventory and merchandising, and ERP expected.
  • Working knowledge of ETL (Extract-Transform-Load) tools (e.g., Informatica, Talend, Pentaho, SSIS, DataStage, Clover) a plus
  • Experience with a batch monitor scheduling tool such as CA Workload Automation dSeries or Control M a plus
  • Experience with Platform Analytics and Workstation in MicroStrategy a plus
  • Professional certifications, related published works or related speaking engagements are a plus
  • Master’s in Computer Science (or related) or MBA a plus
  • Experience with related/complementary open-source software platforms and languages (e.g. .NET, Java, Linux, Apache, Perl/Python/PHP, Chef) a plus



  • Bachelors’ degree in Computer Science Engineering, Management Information Systems, or related field from an accredited college/university
