Job title:  Merchandise Manager

General Summary: The Merchandise Manager is responsible for the performance of a business category.  This position is responsible for the strategic direction of the merchandise assortment within the assigned category.  They lead a team of elite talent to drive business priorities, set goals and create action plans to execute against. They collaborate closely with multiple partners, including Marketing, Planning and Supply Chain to strategically drive the category performance.  In addition, this leader fosters an environment of personal development to build strong long term succession planning potential. They cultivate morale and drive engagement through recognition and communication.

Reports to:  General Merchandise Manager

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Accountable to delivering sales, margin and inventory turnover results for a category
  • Uses facts and analytics to balance data with trends to drive market share growth
  • Oversees an assortment to meet customer demand for category depth and breadth
  • Directs team to ensure merchandise plans are sufficient to drive sales and profit
  • Manages product pricing strategies, merchandising and flow strategies and forecasts; holds team accountable to maximize gross margin
  • Collaborates with Supply Chain leadership to maximize speed to market
  • Oversees participation in vendor partnerships; manages negotiation strategies relative to exclusives, product costs, to maximize margin opportunities
  • Builds an elite merchant team through succession planning; coaches, assures training needs are identified and fulfilled, establishes high performance standards and measurements, and provides feedback to manage performance and develop future leaders

  • Possesses the capacity for analyzing data to grow the business within a changing consumer landscape
  • Strong Financial Acumen
  • Strong strategic ability.  Possesses both a keen attention to detail and a creative vision to formulate and achieve overall merchandising strategies within a complex, multi-billion dollar enterprise.  Assesses immediate challenges, regularly reviews operational performance vs. expectation, manages to financial and operating metrics
  • Does not accept the status-quo; a champion for change.  Adapts to a rapidly changing, fast paced work environment
  • Strong interpersonal and judgment skills and can create enthusiasm within the team. Possesses the presence and credibility to influence.
  • Possesses strong written and verbal communications skills; equally effective in both formal and informal settings with senior executives, peers, business partners, vendors and other constituents. Has strong executive presence;  quick intelligence, and responds to inquiries and questions.

 

Qualifications

 

Experience:

  • Minimum 8 years experience in buying leadership role

 

Education:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree

     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred experience in ecommerce and traditional retail buying role
