Job title: Senior UNIX Systems Engineer

General Summary: The Senior UNIX Systems Engineer must be skilled in the administration of IBM Power Systems AIX 6.1-7.2, VIO and HMC. The ideal candidate will also have skills administering RedHat OS.  The UNIX administrator will be responsible for administering servers (Linux & AIX) in the company supporting critical applications/systems. This will involve, physical and virtual servers in our data center as well as administering our cloud presence. Primary responsibility is to leverage expertise to drive and implement technical solutions that enable the business to meet their needs both through project and support initiatives.

Reports to Manager Enterprise Unix & Storage

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure and maintain AIX systems
  • Install, configure and maintain IBM Power hardware including HMC
  • Install, configure and maintain PowerVM
  • Deliver system solutions across an array of technologies (VMWare, POWER Virt, Cloud, etc.)
  • Monitor and respond to system performance and reports to maintain systems to DSW standards
  • Support application teams in both new installation and upgrade efforts
  • Conduct routine hardware and software audits of servers to ensure compliance with established standards, policies and configuration guidelines
  • Scripting capabilities to automate and/or streamline tasks where applicable
  • Identify and correct OS and hardware related issues/problems
  • Install, test and implement hardware in the Data Center by working in unison with DC personnel
  • Maintain the infrastructure’s support applications (monitoring, management, etc.)
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with our vendors to keep each party apprised of current events
  • Stay up to date on current areas of expertise and be willing to explore new frontiers
  • Participate in on-call support activities
  • Work as a member of a team to deliver quality solutions in a timely manner
     

 

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Intimate knowledge of IBM Power, PowerVM, HMC and AIX
  • Understanding of SAN Concepts and Methodologies
  • Understanding of Enterprise Level DR and Backup and Recovery Processes
  • Understanding of Linux, Unix, and Windows systems for file system layout

 

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: 

  • 3-5 years of UNIX administration experience with AIX 6.1 -7.2
  • 3-5 years of experience in installing and configuring and maintaining PowerVM
  • 3-5 years of experience in installing, configuring and maintaining HMC
  • 3-5 years in experience providing Application support 
  • Experienced in administration of UNIX servers running Oracle Databases
  • Excellent personal communication, group interaction and organizational skills
  • Experience with SAN storage in an NPIV and/or VSCSI implementation a required
  • Experience in Unix Scripting language(s) (ksh, perl, etc.)
  • Experience administering in the cloud (Azure, GCP, etc) is a plus
  • ITIL experience a plus
  • Experience in Enterprise Monitoring solutions a plus
  • Participate in UNIX group work orders
     

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university with an emphasis in computer science
