Job title:  Senior Merchandise Planner

General Summary: The Senior Merchandise Planner is accountable for business results in complex or high-volume categories to ensure critical financial parameters are achieved.  The position performs complex analysis and uses this information to formulate the financial strategies which drive sales and gross margin results. 

Reports to: Merchandise Planning Manager or Senior Manager


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages the financial plans for large volume or complex category in the business and coordinates the sub-class plan strategies in partnership with merchants.
  • Analyzes business performance and recommends financial strategies to drive profitability in merchandise category.
  • Conducts historical hindsight analysis, develops pre-season plan, re-forecasts merchandise plan when necessary.
  • Manages markdowns and open-to-buy and analyzes to maximize business opportunities, makes recommendations to merchandising partners and influences business decisions.
  • Develops weekly sales, markdown and receipt plans at the department, class and subclass levels based on both trend and historical performance.
  • Collaborates with merchant partners to incorporate assortment architecture and ensure delivery of financial goals.
  • Provides assortment planning guidance, brand plan financials, markdown direction, and ad-hoc analysis focused on maximizing opportunities and minimizing risk.
  • Acts as project manager for ad hoc projects; system implementations and updates, merchandise initiatives, etc.
  • Exemplifies leadership and provides insight in meetings, presentations and discussions concerning financial strategies, pre-season plans or forecasts.
  • Builds relationships with cross-functional teams in Marketing, Finance, Operations and Buyers across categories to drive overall business strategy and uphold the DSW Mission.

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong statistical/analytical skills including data retrieval, organization, presentation and summary skills
  • Excellent communication skills including written and verbal with emphasis on delivery of financial concepts
  • Proficient in Excel, Data Warehouse/Business Objects and Enterprise Planning





  • Minimum of 6+ years’ experience in merchandise planning, allocation, financial analysis, buying



  • B.S. degree in Business or Marketing, preferred
