Merchandising leaders at DSW have an eye for product, and can create assortment strategies to achieve sales and margin goals, ensuring that DSW remains THE destination for our Shoe Lover customer. At all levels, our merchant leaders possess the ability to:


  • Select and purchase merchandise including type, quality, source, timing, delivery, mix and promotion for assigned merchandise category
  • Create and implement plans to maximize gross profit by coordinating sales, gross margin, inventory turnover, cost of promotion and markdowns for assigned category
  • Recommend and direct the development and implementation of category merchandise strategy and tactical plans
  • Partner with Advertising/Marketing to maximize merchandising opportunities and recommend programs/plans to supervisor for implementation 
  • Select and evaluate different vendors and negotiate product cost
  • Develop and communicate effective merchandising program at the store level
  • Ensure store merchandising standard, in close partnership with the store operations management team, including store displays and visual merchandising 
  • Ensure beneficial vendor alliance, identify new business opportunities consistent with short and long-term strategies 
  • Manage and maximize category product mix, gross margin, promotional expenditures and markdowns
  • Maintain effective category merchandise control system including replenishment, open-to-buy, seasonal, etc., working closely with the Planning & Allocation partners to achieve business and organization objectives
  • Ensure the timely flow and presentation of merchandise to store locations through close coordination with store operations and distribution/transportation logistics
  • Conduct annual and on-going performance evaluations and recommend annual merit increases based on performance
  • Mentor/coach subordinates and ensures that development program(s) are maintained and are on track
  • Effectively communicate team development objective and assist in the attainment of personal growth and performance maximization goal(s)
  • Comply with all federal, state and local laws and regulations regarding employment




  • Dependent upon level, Buyers ideally have 5-7 years buying experience, Sr. Buyers ideally have 7-10 years of buying experience, and DMMs ideally have 12+ years of buying experience. All levels have experience leading a merchandising team of at least 2 direct reports.
  • High degree of analytical and negotiation skills
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Solid coaching/mentoring skills
  • B.S. Degree in Retail Merchandising, Marketing or Business, preferred
