Job title:  Merchandise Planner

General Summary: The Merchandise Planner is accountable for business results by analyzing business performance and recommending financial strategies to ensure merchandise category financial parameters are achieved.  This position performs sales and trend analysis to formulate the pre-season plan construction and in-season adjustments to drive sales and gross margin results.

Reports to: Merchandise Planning Manager or Senior Manager

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes business performance and recommends financial strategies to support the specific merchandise category.
  • Conducts historical hindsight analysis, develops pre-season plan, re-forecasts merchandise plan when necessary, manages markdowns and Open to Buy, and aligns financials for the assortment line review process.
  • Develops weekly sales, markdown and receipt plans at the department, class and subclass levels based on both trend and historical performance.
  • Collaborates with merchant partners to incorporate assortment architecture and ensure delivery of financial goals.
  • Provides assortment planning guidance, brand plan financials, markdown direction, and ad-hoc analysis focused on maximizing opportunities and minimizing risk. This may include both reporting and bottoms-up analysis, as necessary, to support business strategy.
  • Exemplifies leadership and provides insight in meetings, presentations and discussions concerning financial strategies, pre-season plans or forecasts. Examples include:
    • Pre-Season Planning Review
    • Pre-Merchandise Plan Review
    • Merchandise Plan Review (by category)
  • Participates in key business meetings to ensure that the financial plan aligns with the merchandising strategy.  Meetings include:
    • Quarterly Hindsight
    • Weekly department meetings
    • Style / Line review meetings
    • Company strategy meeting
  • Communicates effectively to a wide variety of audiences, in order to drive results.  
     
     

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong statistical/analytical skills including data retrieval, organization, presentation and summary skills
  • Excellent communication skills including written and verbal with emphasis on delivery of financial concepts
  • Proficient in Excel, Data Warehouse/Business Objects and Enterprise Planning

 

Qualifications

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of 4+ years’ experience in merchandise planning, allocation, financial analysis, buying

 

Education:

  • B.S. degree in Business or Marketing, preferred
