Job title:  Associate Buyer

General Summary:  This position makes independent buying decisions within the framework of an overall merchandising strategy for a small category or set of subclasses.  They are responsible for driving sales and profitability in the assigned product categories; with autonomy for the life cycle of the product from assortment concept to purchase to delivery to marketing to sell through or markdown.

Reports to:  Buyer

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recommends and directs the development and implementation of merchandise strategy and plans, with Buyer oversight to ensure overall category strategy is achieved
  • Utilizes competitive landscape including best styles, current product trends and competitive pricing to devise or evolve in-season strategy
  • Independently selects and purchases product to curate a competitive assortment
  • Works with vendor to determine delivery timing and quantity for purchased product
  • Creates and implements plans to maximize gross profit utilizing sales, gross margin, inventory turnover, cost of promotion and markdowns for areas managed
  • Selects and evaluates vendor sources and negotiates product cost
  • Achieves gross margin, sales and inventory turnover objectives for assigned category
  • Manages and maximizes finances for category including IMU, gross margin, promotions and markdowns
  • Influences Visual Merchandising team to ensure store set ups have best placement and location within overall category
  • Identifies and recommends business risks and opportunities consistent with the short and long term merchandise strategies
  • Ensures the timely flow of merchandise to stores, coordinating with Allocation, Distribution and Store Operations
  • Works closely with Planning team to ensure category forecasting is consistent with business objectives
  • Partners with Marketing to maximize marketing opportunities; utilizing available vendor partnerships, key items, seasonal campaigns
  • Leads and manages the Assistant Buyer

Qualifications

Experience:

  • 2 – 3 years buying experience at Assistant Buyer level or equivalent

Education:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Retail Merchandising, Marketing or Business related field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Intermediate to Advanced Microsoft Excel and Word skills
  • Ability to learn Jesta, JDA Assortment Planning and other merchant computer based tools
